The car has been in my possession since 1980. It was bought when I was a student and was the best I could afford as early TR prices were beginning to escalate quickly. The car wasn't really as good as it looked and after 7 years of my ownership became very scruffy. The car was then off the road from 1987 to 2011 when it returned from a 4 plus year full restoration.

It was driven by John Gott in four consecutive Alpine Rallies from 1947-1951. In the last of these he won the 1500 Class and gained a Coupe des Alpes. He continued to rally the car internationally after 1951 and also to race it, most notably at his local circuit, Silverstone.

AUSTIN SEVEN OPAL 2 SEAT TOURER Body Type: A.P.E. Date of Manufacture: June 1938 Fuel Tank: 5 Gals Engine Size: 747 c.c. Miles per Gal: 35 mpg + Price New: £112.00 In 1937 this model sold at £102.10s and towards the end of the year the price was increased to £112.00. On July 27th 1938 it was REDUCED to £108.00 I paid £30 for it in 1960. Production Nos: At least 700 from APE 80 (early 1936) through to February 1939. There are only 63 recorded survivors. This model was classified as one of Herbert Austin’s Jewels and known as the OPAL. Herbert Austin’s 3 Jewels were: THE OPAL, THE RUBY and THE PEARL. This car has won the National Austin Seven Rally in its class at Beaulieu in1990/91/92/94/97/98, 2000/01/02/04/10/11/13/14/15/16/18/23, indicating that it is judged to be the best of the surviving Opals. This car has been in my possession since 1960. Originally restored between 1960 and 1963 at a cost of £70, (£35 of this was for the hood) it was again overhauled between 1974 and 1989 (a long job). During the 60’s and 70’s it was my daily form of transport, now in my retirement it is once again. Normal touring speed is 45 – 50 mph, but could achieve 75 mph. This engine, with some modifications, could reach speeds of over 100 mph. Many cars have been developed from these early Austin 7’s. The first Jaguar S.S. was developed from a swallow. (S.S. = Swallow Sidecar Company) Colin Chapman’s Lotus was originally an Austin 7 and can still be seen at some of our rallies. The Broadley Austin was the fore-runner of the Lola Marque. John Cooper of Mini Cooper fame was given an Austin 7 Cooper Special by his father in 1936 when John was 12 years old. The first Datsuns were copies of the early Austin 7. The first early BMW was an Austin 7 with a DIXI engine and the now familiar grill. France: Various models made by Rosengart. USA: The Jeep, Bantham and Roadstar. Alec Issigonis started to design and build a special in 1933 using Austin bits. This special was very “special” in that it had Independent Suspension. It was completed a few months before the war when it won on its first outing. This special is still raced today, powered by the 750 cc engine and beating 1100 cc and 2 litre cars. This special is called “Lightweight” and is a tribute to the engineering skills of Alec Issigonis. This Opal is used for enjoyment. It is shown at rallies in concours condition, but is also used for hill climbs (which it wins). Last year it went to the Black Forest in Germany and to the Cotswolds, just a few little runs out. I enjoy it, I hope you have too, but Please Treat it With Care and help me keep it like this.

Daf has been in our family 50 years, my late husband passed her to me 17 years ago. The car is regularly used & has been over to France numerous times, competing the Claret and Classic Bordeux Rallies, also the famous ERU cheese rally Portugal to Holland and knows her way around France. On her 4th engine kindly built this time by Steve Hodgeson of SMH Services, Steve owns 11 Austin 7s which helps enormously in keeping Daf on the road. Daf is currently getting ready to go to the Fougere rally France, where she won the Spirit of the Rally award last year for being the smallest and slowest car out of 150 cars. I love driving her many fond memories.

This car is the prototype for the MGVA a One and a Half litre saloon car with chassis number 0251. It has the original prototype engine which was subsequently bored out to police car specification ( the model was in production from 1937 through to the outbreak of WW2).
